EGO State Therapy

Do you ever feel one part of you can’t let go or change, or something has been holding you back from achieving your goals? Are you stuck and need help moving forward? Then Ego State Therapy can help you! Ego State Therapy is an advanced psychodynamic approach that you can use to work with a wide range of behavioural, cognitive, emotional and trauma-based conditions. Using techniques akin to family therapy and group therapy, it provides a powerful dissociative approach to working with the individual components of your mind to help deal with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, bereavement, smoking and chronic pain.

Ego state work is a short, simple and effective therapy that can be enhanced by hypnosis. Our personality consists of a group of different states, each state having an identity, memory and specific traits. From a young age we evolve and develop these ego states and will continue to do so as we continue through life. As each one of us are unique, so too is the kaleidoscope of each state to us. If an ego state is without the resources it requires and not working well with other ego states this can result in you feeling distressed, anxious and depressed. This inner conflict can sabotage our dreams, ambitions and goals.

Psychology has long explored the concept of personality being segmented into several ego states, originally pioneered by psychoanalyst Paul Federn and then developed into Ego state Therapy by John. G. Watkins. These ego states vary from the “the good boy”, the “frightened child”, the “perfectionist” or “control freak” to name a few examples. In Ego state therapy together we identify each ego state, its function and help it become more integrated and harmonious for your optimum wellbeing. For our human personality to develop there are two essential processes, integration and differentiation. Integration allows us to put concepts together, like pairing a shirt and trousers to create a unit called clothes. Differentiation helps us separate the general ideas into specific meanings like the difference between a comfortable shirt and an uncomfortable shirt.

The principle of personality development where through a process of separation resulted in different parts, called ego states, with boundaries with increased or decreased permeability. Mood disorders like depression, anxiety, and fear exist with different levels of intensity. Not on an either or basis. When an ego state develops in response to psychological trauma it may be completely cut off from the rest of the personality.
