YOUR GUIDE TO REDUCING & STOPPING VAPING
Taking back control — one choice at a time
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress.
If you’ve tried to quit before and found yourself going back to vaping, that doesn’t mean you can’t do it.
Nicotine is addictive, and changing a well-established habit takes practice. Every vape-free period, every delayed craving and every conscious choice is evidence that you are changing the habit and taking back control.
STAGE 1 — CREATE A LONGER VAPE-FREE WINDOW
Start by identifying when you normally have your first vape.
If you currently vape first thing in the morning, your first goal could simply be:
“I don’t vape before lunchtime.”
Once that feels comfortable, gradually extend the vape-free period.
For example:
Morning → lunchtime → afternoon
The aim is to move from:
“I vape whenever I feel like it.”
to:
“I choose when I use nicotine.”
You’ve already taken a huge step if you’ve stopped the automatic morning vape.
STAGE 2 — CREATE LONGER GAPS WITHIN YOUR VAPE WINDOW
Once you’ve created a defined period in which you allow yourself to vape, don’t feel that you have to vape throughout that entire window.
Instead, start creating space between each vape.
For example:
Vape → wait → vape → wait → vape
Gradually make the gaps longer.
You might begin with:
30 minutes → 45 minutes → 60 minutes → 90 minutes
There is no need to rush.
Your aim is to teach your brain:
“I don’t need nicotine every time I think about it.”
The vaping window becomes smaller, while your periods of freedom become longer.
STAGE 3 — DELAY THE URGE
This is where you begin to separate the urge from the action.
When you get the thought:
“I want to vape.”
don’t immediately reach for the vape.
Tell yourself:
“I’ll wait 10 minutes.”
Then use the 4 Ds.
⏰ DELAY
Give the craving time to pass.
🌿 DISTRACT
Change what you’re doing. Walk, stretch, shower, tidy something, call someone or get outside.
🌬️ DEEP BREATHE
Take slow, comfortable breaths.
Breathe in gently → breathe out slowly.
Repeat several times.
💧 DRINK
Have a glass of water.
You can also use chewing gum, sugar-free mints or another simple activity to keep your mouth and hands occupied.
Remember:
A craving is an urge — not an instruction.
You don’t have to act on every craving.
🔄 REPLACE THE RITUAL
Vaping isn’t necessarily only about nicotine.
There can also be a powerful hand-to-mouth, breathing and routine component.
Some people find it helpful to replace this part of the habit with:
- Chewing gum
- Sugar-free mints
- A water bottle or straw
- Slow breathing
- Something to occupy the hands
- A nicotine-free inhalation/breathing device
A small stainless-steel or similar nicotine-free breathing device can be used as a behavioural substitute for the familiar hand-to-mouth and inhalation ritual.
It doesn’t provide nicotine and isn’t a treatment by itself. Its purpose is simply to help replace part of the familiar routine.
🧠 KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS
For a few days, notice when and why you reach for your vape.
You might notice triggers such as:
Boredom • Stress • Driving • After food • Studying • Socialising • Alcohol • Fatigue • Being around other vapers
Try keeping a simple record:
TIME | TRIGGER | CRAVING 0–10 | WHAT I DID
You may discover that some cravings are actually connected to a situation, emotion or routine, rather than a genuine need for nicotine.
Once you know your triggers, you can change the pattern.
🏃 USE YOUR BODY
Movement can be a powerful way to interrupt a craving.
You don’t need a full workout.
Try:
A brisk walk • Cycling • Running • Stretching • Gym • Getting outside • A few minutes of movement
If you’re already active and enjoy sport, use that strength.
Ask yourself:
“What would I rather be doing with my body right now?”
🏡 MAKE VAPING LESS CONVENIENT
Small environmental changes can make a big difference.
Don’t keep your vape beside you.
Put it somewhere inconvenient.
Don’t carry it constantly in your hand or pocket.
Create vape-free spaces.
The more effort it takes to reach the vape, the more opportunity you have to pause and make a conscious choice.
💬 CHANGE THE LANGUAGE
Instead of:
❌ “I’m not allowed to vape.”
Try:
✅ “I’m choosing not to vape right now.”
Instead of:
❌ “I can’t cope with this craving.”
Try:
✅ “This is a craving. It will pass.”
Instead of:
❌ “I’ve failed.”
Try:
✅ “I’ve learned something about my triggers.”
You are not failing.
You are learning a new behaviour.
⭐ IF YOU HAVE A SLIP
One vape does not erase your progress.
Don’t turn:
“I had one.”
into:
“I’ve ruined everything.”
Stop. Reset. Ask yourself:
“What triggered me?”
Then continue.
A slip is information — not failure.
🌿 BUILD YOUR NICOTINE-FREE IDENTITY
The ultimate goal isn’t to spend your life thinking about quitting.
It’s to become someone who simply doesn’t need nicotine.
Start noticing the changes:
🌿 Longer periods without nicotine
🌿 Fewer automatic urges
🌿 Greater control
🌿 More confidence
🌿 More freedom
🌿 Less dependence on the vape
Every time you delay an urge, you are practising independence from nicotine.
🌟 YOUR PERSONAL RESET
I don’t have to respond to every craving.
I can pause.
I can breathe.
I can choose.
I am in control of my next decision.
